New jerseys, new teammates and a very familiar kind of chaos: our 2026/27 season began with an Opening Party full of Outfielders spirit at the Shark Hotel.
Sydney Outfielders kicked off its 2026/27 season in style on Saturday 10 October, bringing players, rookies and friends together at the Shark Hotel for our annual Season Opening Party. Familiar faces caught up, new ones found their feet, and the room filled with that unmistakable Outfielders energy.
A bigger, brighter Outfielders family
With 235 registered players across 14 teams, our 26th season has plenty to look forward to. We welcomed two brand-new teams, Opals and Yellow Jackets, alongside our returning favourites. But the biggest reveal of the night belonged to our rookies.
New players discovered their teams, met their captains and collected their jerseys. There were introductions, team photographs and the wonderful moment when a room full of strangers began turning into teammates. At the Outfielders, that first jersey is about more than joining a softball team. It is about finding your people.
One league, together on game night
Among the evening’s announcements was something we had been working towards: securing all the diamonds at Robertson Road fields, so we could come together on the same fields this season. More chances to see friends across the league, cheer another team on and share the atmosphere that makes Tuesday nights ours.
With our first games beginning on Tuesday 13 October, the party was a chance to meet the people we would be playing alongside—and against—before the first pitch. Experienced players, complete beginners and friends there for the company all had a place in the room.
The formalities finished. The pool did not.
Between food, photographs, announcements and catching up, the evening rolled into a long night of pool and laughter. The tables stayed busy until midnight. A stage right beside them brought some unexpected live entertainment courtesy of our friends in the general public: whenever a decent track came on, there was plenty to keep the sidelines entertained too.
Some of us have played together for years. Others are picking up a bat for the first time. Nights like this make the introductions easier and remind us why we keep coming back. Community before competition is what brings the whole thing together.
Here’s to 2026/27!
Thank you to everyone who joined us, the captains who welcomed their new players, the volunteers and Committee who brought the evening together, and the Shark Hotel for hosting us. Here’s to our rookies, our returning players and another season of softball, friendships and unforgettable moments.
