Team spirit, rain delays and the Pink Mitts

FROM THE ARCHIVE · 2007/08 SEASON

All news & stories

The Pink Mitts’ 2007/08 newsletters offer a lively glimpse of an earlier Outfielders season — and the team spirit that still feels familiar.

A team newsletter dated 14 November 2007 opens with new shirts, the first match and sunshine in the batters’ eyes. Pink Mitts played Two Fruits and recorded a 19–7 win, helped by some strong six-run innings. The writing mixes the result with the small details that turn a game into a shared memory.

Helping the opposition finish the game

When some Two Fruits players needed to leave for a concert, Pink Mitts offered two fielders to help the game continue. It is a small moment in an old match report, but a lovely example of teammates and opponents looking after the afternoon together.

A season that finished with a downpour

By the final newsletter, dated 26 February 2008, rain and hail had washed out the last playoff. Pink Mitts finished third, behind Zanytrudes and Hustlers, with Defenders fourth. The end-of-season message thanked the people who had contributed throughout the competition.

That final issue also records the proposal for the Libby Stowe Perpetual Trophy, honouring the founder of Pink Mitts. The tribute places generosity, humour and sportsmanship alongside the season’s results — qualities our honours continue to recognise today.

These newsletters preserve more than a ladder. They show the work of captains and volunteers, friendships within teams and a willingness to help the opposition. Nearly two decades on, they remain a warm reminder of the people who have shaped the Outfielders.
